convertibleA home insurance policy does not cover damages that result from flooding. Many people assume that this also applies to auto insurance. However, some Ohio auto insurance policies actually do cover flood damage—the real question is, does yours?

Damages caused by floods are not covered by default through any auto insurance policy. Instead, to enjoy this protection, your policy must have comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage doesn't just cover water damage; it also covers fire damage, theft, vandalism, acts of nature and more.

Having comprehensive coverage may provide you with reimbursement for damages after a flood, but it does not absolve you of your responsibility to pay your insurance policy’s deductible. If the dollar amount of damage is at or below the limit of your deductible, then your insurance company will not reimburse anything. It's also important to remember that auto insurance deductibles are per incident and not per year, so even if you have paid the deductible once that year, you will still be liable for paying it again.

If you’re involved in an incident that has several different layers of damages, such as damage to another's property, bodily injury liability plus damage to your car, then the limit on your auto insurance policy might not be enough to cover all of the damages you experience. When this is the case, an umbrella policy, which protects both your home and your car from liability claims that exceed the limits of those policies, can be helpful to have.

If you live, work or frequently park your car in an area prone to flooding, then comprehensive coverage is definitely something you should consider. If you have any questions about how your auto insurance policy is structured and what it will and won't protect you from, give us a call at 740-467-2040.
