Many homeowners with children find themselves filling up the backyard with lots of fun toys that are intended to make their child's day magical. For example, swimming pools, playhouses and trampolines are common items on many a child’s wish list.  Before you rush out to put them in your own backyard, however, there are a few things you need to understand about how these items impact your insurance.

Swimming Pools

Swimming pools are great for whiling away those hot summer days, but before you install a pool in the backyard you’d better be sure that your personal liability insurance is set up. A pool is a tempting hazard, especially for kids. You need to ensure that your homeowner’s insurance policy covers the pool and that you have adequate coverage for any personal injuries that might occur.

Many Millersport insurance policies won’t provide coverage for your pool unless you take adequate safety measures to prevent injuries or drowning.  Drowning is the no. 2 cause of death for children age 1 to 14. A fence with a gate that can be locked is a very good idea, and can be a requirement for some policies. Studies indicate that having a four-sided fence around the pool, isolating it from the house and yard, reduces the incidence of drowning by up to 83%.

Trampolines are fun, but only until someone gets hurt, especially if your homeowner’s policy excludes coverage for trampoline injuries or damage. Not only do some policies provide zero coverage for trampoline related incidents, but simply owning a trampoline can make you uninsurable.

It’s not just injury from using the trampoline that you need to worry about. The fact that most trampolines are lightweight makes them vulnerable to large gusts of wind during storms. If trampolines are not covered on your insurance policy, damage to your home or your neighbor’s due to flying trampolines won’t be covered.

Multi story playhouses with jungle gyms attached have become a popular backyard accessory, but they should come with a word of warning. Injuries sustained while playing on the set may or may not be covered by your homeowner’s policy. These playhouses are considered a risk, and if you have exclusions in your policy for playhouses you could be liable for medical costs related to accidents or injuries.

Don’t take chances with your homeowner’s policy. Give Tom Jones Insurance a call at 740-467-2040 and we’ll help make sure you have the coverage you need for your home and your backyard playthings. We’ll help give you peace of mind so you can enjoy your backyard without worrying.
